Elderberry for Sore Throat

Updated: Jun 15, 2020

Most of my days are consumed by healthy children running around, being loud, rambunctious and behaving like wild, hardy boys. On occasion the sounds change to complaintive, whining, unhealthy grumbles. They have coughs, sore throats, stuffy sinuses. Sound familiar?

I have written a few blogs on Homeopathy and how we use Homeopathic remedies to support our ailing bodies. We have been practicing Homeopathy, my husband and I with our children, for 11+ years. Omar and his family (Parents and siblings) have been practicing for over 40 years. Wow! Thank God for strong legs to stand on.

For the first 5 years or so when the children or one of us parents got a sore throat and/or cough I turned only to Homeopathics and hot tea with honey. The most common remedy, Hepar Sulphur, has served us greatly.

Hepar Sulphur is for a loose, croupy cough which in most cases is accompanied by a sore throat.

Sore throats have been, for me, my hardest ailment to endure. I began singing at church regularly as a child and have kept singing a part of my life up to the current day. Growing up, my Mother taught me about hot tea, honey, and hot water with lemon and salt, all of which was soothing and worked great. However, life got busy, as it can and does, and I began using Halls and Ricola throat lozenges. Easy, on-the-go, throat soothing convenience.

~hold this thought ~ I'll come back to it~

As a Mother who chose to work from home and focus on our children's health, education and home life, using hot tea, honey & lemon has been doable. It still takes extra time and effort, but being at home does help. Aiming to support our bodies as naturally and homeopathically as possible, I have spent time studying the remedies, using them, and learning in-depth aspects.

My favorite resource is

by Maesimund B. Panos, M.D. and Jane Heimlich.

This book covers a wide range of background regarding Homeopthy.

As our children have grown past the toddler phase into the little kid phase and now, at 10 and 11, the oldest are BIG kids, their ability to express the exact ailment has also grown. Because we have always used Homeopathics we ask them specific questions about their cough or sore throat. (i.e hurts more on the left side, etc) We have created a habit with them to discover the aspects of the ailment and line it up with the correct Homeopathic remedy. The book above has served us every time. Using local, raw honey to soothe is great, but might not be as easy or economical for some. There are a few products at your local health food market or online that are specifically made to soothe and help with the soreness.

This particular time 3 out of 4 boys had extremely sore throats and were in great need of something to soothe them. I headed to our local Whole Foods Market in search of anything that would help.

I was delighted to find Elderberry!

We personally prefer the syrup and find that one bottle is enough for our whole crew during one isolated bout with a sore throat.

Elderberries are packed with vitamin C, dietary fiber and antioxidants
Elderberry extract has been found to reduce the length and severity of symptoms caused by the influenza virus
They can help tame inflammation, lessen stress, and help protect your heart
Experts recommend elderberry to help prevent and ease cold and flu symptoms

~back to that thought~

Along with a constant cough, our children typically have a sore throat and do not hesitate to complain about it. Out of desperation one time I gave them Ricola cough drops. I have nothing against these drops, they are not too bad as far as ingredients go, but upon reading in my Homeopathic Medicine At Home book, I found this important piece of info.

Please Read

Page 111 section on Coughs

the last paragraph states:

For immediate relief of a sore throat, suck a slippery elm lozenge, black current pastille, elderberry or lemon drop.

If you're at home, make your own cough mixture of equal part honey, glycerine, and lemon juice.

~here's the imperative part

Avoid all medicated cough drops; they contain camphor, menthol, eucalyptus, or chloroform, all of which render a homeopathic remedy useless.

In simpler terms~ If you are taking Homeopathic remedies, those particular ingredients (camphor, menthol, eucalyptus and chloroform) stop the Homeopathics from working for you/you're body.

Needless to say we do not use mainstream cough drops anymore because we use Homeopathics 100% of the time.

Instead, I found this amazing product.

Soothes sore throat, non-stop cough, and reduces stress!

These are what we use in place of cough drops

Black Current Pastilles

In addition to vitamin C, blackcurrants have plenty of antioxidants and anthocyanins. These can help strengthen your immune system, soothe sore throats, and ease flu symptoms. Blackcurrant leaves also have a range of properties, including antimicrobial.

On the back under warning, it says to ask your Doctor before giving to children under 12. We spoke to our local Homeopathic Dr. and we were given confirmation that they are safe for kids!

Please follow your heart and do your own research. Ask your Doctor and make the best decision for your family. Many mainstream Dr.'s may not be knowledgeable on Bach flower remedies and how Homeopathics work. Do your best!

If you haven't read about Bach Flower remedies, check out my blog

My Postpartum Plan where I explain them in greater detail!

Omar and I created this website and blog to be able to share our stories and helpful tips regarding working with Homeopathy.

We wish you well!

We wish you health, strength & happiness.
